Kareem Deserves a Statue! But. . .

A lot has been made of Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s recent comments that he feels “disrespected” by the Los Angeles Lakers organization because he does not have a statue outside of Staples Center.

He’s made it very clear that he wants and deserves a statue. And that’s the problem. You don’t ask for recognition. You don’t ask for awards. And you certainly don’t ask you former employer to erect a statue in your image, no matter how great you were.

And its not just his play on the court that has to be taken into account. There is no doubt that Kareem has contributed to the Lakers organization and helped make them one of the premier franchises in all of sports.

However, by all accounts he has been a real thorn in the side of the team as well. And Los Angeles is full of stories about Kareem being surly and (sometimes) outright mean to fans. He has burned some bridges during his lifetime and now it seems like all this is coming back to bite him on the ass.

For their part, the Lakers have said that a statue of Kareem is coming. And that it has been planned for awhile. He is going to be next. And according to the Lakers, Kareem has known about this for some time. So it makes Kareem’s recent comments puzzling.

If he knew a statue was in the works, why throw such a hissy fit in the media? It just makes him seem like a bitter ex-player desperately seeking some attention.

So what’s going to happen when he does get his statue. Can you imagine what that unveiling ceremony is going to be like? Its going to be a bunch of people on stage who don’t want to be there. And then all this will be dredged up again.

Nobody wins and everyone looks bad.
